School Programs

Stokes Nature Center School Programs provide science-based programs for students in pre-school through 5th grade. We also have field-based science programs for students from pre-school – 12th grade. School Programs are also available for summer and afterschool.

Pre-school

Wee Hike 1.5 hours at SNC.

Offered Mar. - Nov., $2.75 per student.


Take an adventure along the River Trail using your senses to discover the sights and sounds of nature. Go on a scavenger hunt, reach into touch boxes, and even meet a snake!

A Touch of Nature Outreach, 1.5 hours in your classroom.

Offered year round, $2.75 per student plus travel fee.


Explore the textures, colors, and shapes of natural objects in three

different learning stations using hands-on activities, crafts, and stories.

 

Kindergarten

Nature Explorers 1.5 hours at SNC.

Offered Sept. - mid Nov., mid Apr.- May, $2.75 per student.

Explore the natural world using all your senses, and investigate how

weather affects the world outside.

  Standard 1 - Students will make observations using the five senses.

  Standard 3 - Students will observe weather and describe how seasonal

changes affect living creatures.

Wildlife in Winter Outreach 1.5 hours in your classroom.

Offered Sept. - Feb., $2.75 per student plus travel fee.

Discover how animals survive the winter with activities, songs, puppets, and

even a science experiment! Get up close and personal with a variety of animal

specimens, furs and skins from the SNC collection.

 

  Standard 2, Obj. 1 - Observe, describe, and categorize animals according to unique char.

  Standard 3, Obj. 2 - Observe and describe seasonal changes and communicate how those changes affect living things.

 

1st Grade

Signs of the Seasons 1.5 hours at SNC.

Offered Sept. - Nov., Mar. - May, $2.50 per student.

Turn your eyes to the skies and investigate how living things adjust to seasons.

  Standard 5: Students will observe and describe the basic components of

weather as related to the activities of plants, animals, and people.

All About Plants Outreach 1.5 hours, in your classroom and schoolyard.

Offered Sept. - May, $2.75 per student plus travel fee.

What does a plant need to grow? What makes a plant a plant? How do

people use plants? Investigate these questions in and out of the classroom!

  Standard 4: Students will observe and categorize plants and plant parts

according to similarities and differences.

 

2nd Grade

Rockin’ with Rocks Outreach, 2 hours in your classroom.

Offered Sept. - May, $2.75 per student plus travel fee.

Can rocks float, fizz, or cut glass? Examine rock characteristics, explore the

rock cycle and amazing uses of rocks.

  Standard 6: Students will investigate changes in rocks.

Amazing Adaptations Outreach , 2 hours in your classroom.

Offered Sept. - May, $2.75 per student plus travel fee.

Why don’t elephants or emus or palm trees live here? Explore the adaptations

or “smart parts” of animals and plants that let them survive and thrive where they live.

  Standard 1: Students will compare changes and adaptations of plants and animals.


3rd Grade

River of Life , 2 hours at SNC.

Offered Sept. - mid. Nov., mid April - May, $2.75 per student.

Come explore the sights and sounds of the Logan River and discover who

lives in this riparian wetland!

   Standard 2: Students will understand that organisms depend on living

and nonliving things within their environment.

The Sky Above Outreach , 2 hours in your classroom.

Offered Sept. - May, $2.75 per student plus travel fee.

Take a trip into the skies! Investigate why the moon changes, why apples fall

to the ground, and other mysteries of our solar system.

  Standard 1: Students will understand that the shape of Earth and the moon are spherical and that Earth rotates on its axis to produce the appearance of the sun and the moon moving through the sky.

 

4th Grade

Geology Outreach 2 hours in your classroom.

Offered Sept. - May, $2.75 per student plus travel fee.

Can rocks float, fizz, or cut glass? What’s strong enough to break rocks?

Examine rock characteristics and find out how fossils form.

  Standard 3, Obj. 1: Identify basic properties of minerals and rocks.

  Standard 4: Students will understand how fossils are formed, where they

may be found in Utah, and how they can be used to make inferences.

Soils 2 hours at SNC.

Offered Sept. - Nov., Mar. - May, $2.75 per student.

Come investigate our connections to soil! Be a soil chef and investigate its different layers.

  Standard 3, Obj. 3: Observe the basic components of soil and relate the

components to plant growth.

Weather 2 hours at SNC.

Offered Sept. - Nov., Mar. - May, $2.75 per student.

Predict the weather special instruments such as an ancient weather glass,

a Galileo thermometer, and our high-tech weather station.

  Standard 2: Students will understand that the elements of weather can be observed,

measured, and recorded to make predictions and determine simple weather patterns.

Wetlands 2 hours at Benson Bridge.

Offered Sept. - Oct, mid Apr. - May, $2.75 per student.

Squish! Learn about the plants and animals that call this diverse habitat home. A FREE pre-visit is available (schedule permitting) with USU Water Quality Extension. Ask for information when scheduling your program.

 Standard 5 - Students will understand the physical characteristics of Utah's wetlands, forest and deserts and identify common organisms for each environment.

5th Grade

Adaptations: Nice Genes! 2 hours at SNC.

Offered Sept. - Nov., Mar. - May, $2.75 per student.

Explore the inherited traits and learned behaviors that help animals and plants share resources and survive in different environments.

   Standard 5 -Students will understand that traits are passed from the parent organisms to their offspring, and that sometimes the offspring may possess variations of these traits that may help or hinder survival in a given environment.

Fantastic Forces Outreach 2 hours in your classroom.

Offered Sept. - May, $2.75 per student plus travel fee.

Why does Logan Canyon look like a layer cake? How do we know we’re not in Kansas? Examine the forces that have created the amazing landscape around us.

  Standard 2 - Describe how weathering and erosion change Earth’s surface

 

Multi-age Programs

Kindergarten – 6 th Grade

Critters in the Classroom , 45 minutes in your classroom.

Offered Sept. - May, $45 fee for program.

SNC critters are ready to roll! Meet some of our wild crawling and slithering

neighbors in this program with live animals as well as skull and fur specimens.

6 th – 12 th Grade

River Monitoring 1 - 2 hours at SNC.

Offered year-round, $2.50 per student

Test water quality, sample aquatic insects, and survey the stream channel.

Help us as we monitor this stretch of the Logan River that we are caretaking

through the Adopt-a-Waterbody program.

 

SNC Special Exploration Programs

4 th and 5 th Grades

Stokes Field Expeditions, three to four full-day field programs

throughout the year at various locations; offered Sept - May.

Designed to encourage and develop deeper connections between local students and their natural surroundings by exploring our mountains and valleys in all seasons by foot or snowshoe.

Discover the geology and different plant communities of Logan Canyon in fall. You can choose to participate for one or two days in the fall. Explore the winter landscape on snowshoes in winter. Then in spring, get immersed in the sights and sounds of our local wetlands.

Stokes Field Expeditions Program Fee: $11 per student per day.

Fee includes a naturalist journal, use of snowshoes, snowboots, and outdoor clothing and equipment, and a pre-visit program prior to each field day. Schools are responsible for bus fees. Students must bring a lunch and water.

4th Grade:

  Standard 2 - Students will understand that the elements of weather can be observed, measured, and recorded to make predictions and determine simple weather patterns.

  Standard 4 - Students will understand how fossils are formed, where they may be found in Utah, and how they can be used to make inferences.

5th Grade:

  Standard 2 - Students will understand that volcanoes, earthquakes, uplift, weathering, and erosion reshape Earth’s surface.

  Standard 5 - Students will understand that traits are passed from the parent organisms to their offspring, and that sometimes the offspring may possess variations of these traits that may help or hinder survival in a given environment.

Kindergarten – 8 th Grade

Winter Naturalist Snowshoeing Adventure 2.5 hours at Denzil Steward Nature Park, Green Canyon, Guinavah Malibu Campground or your schoolyard– snow permitting.

Offered Dec. – Feb. $4.50 per student.

Strap on snowshoes and explore our winter world! Identify animal tracks in the snow, study snow science, investigate winter adaptations of wildlife and more. Program fee includes the use of snowshoes for each student, and warm clothing and boots if needed.
